SALT CATHEDRAL AND VILLA DE LEYVA TOUR

    • The tour begins in the savannah of Bogotá until you reach the city of Zipaquirá, where in pre-Columbian times, salt springs were exploited in this region to produce ‘salt breads’, the hard currency with which the Muiscas traded. Over time, technology changed and they began to open tunnels to extract larger quantities of salt. In these ancient subway galleries stands the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá, 180 meters below the surface. There is a small miners’ chapel there in homage to the Virgin, Our Lady of the Rosary of Guasá (this word means ‘mine’ in Chibcha).
